Contraceptive Coils

Hormonal Coils (hormones suppress ovulation and the coil also prevents implantation, more than 99% effective at preventing pregnancy)

  • Mirena – lasts 8 years for contraception, 5 years for HRT and bleeding control (lighter less painful periods). Bigger insertion device and coil so more suitable for women who have had children.
  • Kyleena – lasts 5 years, smaller insertion device so more suitable for women with no children. Not as effective at bleeding control as the mirena but usually leads to lighter less painful periods.
  • Jaydess – lasts 3 years, smaller insertion device so more suitable for women with no children and less hormones than the Kyleena. Not a great option for women with heavy painful periods.

Copper Coils (copper kills sperm and prevents implantation – good option for women who do not want hormonal contraception but generally give heavier more painful periods, more than 99% effective at preventing pregnancy)

  • Yanae: T-shaped mini copper coil – Lasts 5 years. Smaller device, more suitable for women who have not had children. New insertion system that makes it less painful to insert.
  • T-shaped copper coil – Lasts 10 years, larger device, more suitable for women who have had children. Can be hard to source in Ireland.

YOU MUST GET THE COIL IN THE PHARMACY AND BRING THIS WITH YOU ON THE DAY – WE DO NOT SUPPLY THESE. You will have been given a prescription at the initial consultation or request one from the front desk if you have not been given a prescription – sometimes the doctor will send this directly to the pharmacy for you.

PLANNING FOR YOUR COIL INSERTION

  • It is often best to insert the coil on day 1-5 of period, while bleeding. Please book in at that time unless otherwise advised by your doctor. (in some cases, we do not need to time it with your period, and you will have been advised of the best timing for you in your coil consultation)
  • Please say when booking that it is for a coil insertion as we need more time and to book out a specific room for this.
  • You may be advised to use CYTOTEC tablets prior to the insertion. These can be used in one of 2 ways:
    • Vaginally the night before – 2 tablets, wet under tap for 5 seconds and put high into vagina just before bed. These will be absorbed and may cause cramping and bleeding. (Cytotec will still work if used 4 hours before the procedure).
    • Orally - Dissolve under the tongue an hour before the procedure.
  • On the day of the procedure, please arrive 10 minutes early and do a urine sample.
  • Please eat and drink as normal prior to insertion.
  • You may have some cramps after so we would advise that you go home and rest after the procedure. You may need someone to drive you home afterwards.
  • While the procedure only takes a few minutes, you will need a 30-minute consultation slot. We will use a special gynaecological bed during insertion which places your legs on supports to tilt the pelvis and make the coil easier to insert. Please advise us prior if you have any back/hip issues or are uncomfortable with this.
  • Keep a diary of your periods and book in for a string check at approximately 6 weeks after the insertion.
  • Use condoms for one week after insertion to prevent pregnancy, unless otherwise advised by the doctor. The coil is an effective contraceptive after one week.

Β

PAIN RELIEF

  • Ponston: take this with food before the procedure. It lasts for 8 hours in your system.
  • Cytotec: take this prior if the doctor has advised this for you.
  • Buscopan: some women take buscopan in addition to reduce cramping.

SPECIAL CIRCUMSTANCES

  • IUD after pregnancy – wait until minimum 4 weeks after delivery
  • IUD after miscarriage or abortion – immediately after negative pregnancy test
  • Emergency contraception – can potentially insert T-shaped copper coil up to 5 days following unprotected intercourse but you will need to consult the doctor first to see if this is possible – subject to appointment availability.
